Honolulu Museum of Art

Contempo Artshop

We've been long-time fans of art and were thrilled to design and produce a custom backdrop for the Honolulu Museum of Art's Contempo Artshop. Held at the Spalding House in Makiki, Contempo Artshop was a 10-day event featuring exhibits, talks, demos, and a pretty cool pop-up gallery showcasing a variety of artists.

THE KICKOFF

Contempo Artshop began with a kickoff event hosted by Cartier where guests were given a preview of the art pieces. Attendees were also treated to delicious bites by Chef Leanne Wong and cocktails featuring Ocean Vodka. It was awesome to see the variety of pieces and talk to the museum's curators to learn about the artist's work.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES PRODUCTION

To create an interactive focal area, we designed and built a custom backdrop inspired by the event's creative assets-- fuscia foliage, hashtags, and a bright yellow color palette. The 24 foot-long backdrop leveraged a variety of materials, including a vinyl graphic, laser-cut letters of their logo, and foliage. One of the striking elements of this backdrop was the textural foliage. We selected a variety of species from vines, to monstera, to palms, and ferns for a full and organic look. Each foliage was individually hand-sprayed in several fuscia hues for visual depth.

We then hand-strung the various foliage species together to create an organic composition. The foliage was positioned and layered on top of one another to create a full and lush look.

THE INSTALLATION

The backdrop was installed over several hours--check out this time lapse video below for a peek at the installation process.

We hope you had a chance to stop by this event, and continue to support art and creativity in our community!

A Night at the Museum

We have a sweet spot in our hearts for art and curated spaces, so we were thrilled to feature our Louis Ghost Chairs at an intimate private dinner party at the Honolulu Museum of Art, coordinated by Current Affairs. As one of the world's leading international fashion houses, the client couldn't have selected a better venue. Needless to say, our iconic Louis chairs felt right at home amongst the other works of art.

Held in the Mediterranean Courtyard of the museum, tables were set in this outdoor space, surrounded by collections of European and American art. The variety of textures in this space is absolutely beautiful and for those who haven't visited the museum, it's a must see spot. For all you design buffs, the architect Bertram Goodhue used paving stones made from Chinese granite slabs (which in the early 1800s served as ballast in ships transporting Hawaiian sandalwood); Chinese green glazed tiles; Hawaiian lava rock from Kaimuki; and flagstones cut from aggregate stone from Molokai*

We especially love the juxtaposition of the modern lines of our ghost chairs with the organic elements and stonework in the courtyard--not to mention the blend of "east meets west" architecture that's infused throughout the property.

Throw in the right food (oh yea, drinks!), great company, environment and decor, and you've got a killer recipe for an amazing evening.

Are you ready for your next dinner party?
