AIGA Design Week 2015

Every designer knows the devil is in the details. And that mantra came to life during this year's AIGA Honolulu Design Week-- an inspirational, week-long event showcasing, advancing, and celebrating the professional practice and value of design statewide.

As a sponsor for AIGA Honolulu's Design Week, we designed and produced a custom 6' high monolith centered around the theme "Reveal."  The monolith was designed so that it could be used as event signage, a photo backdrop, and an interactive experience.

Local designers teamed up with their clients to talk about a design project in a fast-paced “Pecha Kucha” style slideshow presentation. This unique format provides a peek-behind-the-curtain at the designer/client partnerships that gave rise to some of Hawaii’s most interesting design solutions.

Leveraging the creative assets from AIGA, we were inspired by the "all-seeing eye" and used this as a bold graphic on the outside of the structure. We also wanted to incorporate a hidden message within the monolith, and their tagline "every designer knows the devil is in the details" was the perfect phrase to reveal within the piece. Guests discovered the message by looking into the tinted acrylic eye which was illuminated from within. Additionally, the monolith was designed to be mobile so that it could be easily transported to various venues across Honolulu.

The Design Week festivities came to a close with AIGA Honolulu’s premier event, the 8th biennial Hawaii’s 5-O Awards Show, where the winners of the design competition are announced and the design community gathers to celebrate great design in Hawaii.

Winning projects were displayed at the conclusion of the program, held at the beautiful Pacific Club.

It was our honor to be one of this year's sponsors and support local creative talent. Congrats to all the nominees and winners!

Ask any one of us what’s at the core of our agency, and you’ll always get one common response—design...followed by an ice cold cocktail in close second!

Design is at the core of everything we do and we were excited to work with AIGA Honolulu a few weeks ago to create some killer elements for their Hawaii Design Showcase during Design Week--a week long event that showcased and celebrated design across Hawaii.

For those not familiar with AIGA, it's the professional association for designers…so the amount of creativity was oozing out the door. Their team took over a warehouse in the city's urban hub for art and design aficionados, Kaka‘ako, and it was ready to host their week-long events.

One of the elements we conceptualized and designed was an oversized backdrop to anchor one of the rooms in the warehouse. Scale is paramount in design, so we constructed an 8ft high by 28ft long wall to fill the vastness of the space.

We then transposed their Designweek wordmark onto the wall and meticulously hand-strung hundreds of feet of CMYK-colored yarn to create their logotype. (For those wondering, CMYK refers to Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black—the colors used in 4-color printing).

This was initially planned as a 1-day installation, but we were glad to hear the team wanted this for the entire week.

As you can imagine, design comes in many forms, applications and mediums and we're constantly inspired by watching other creative minds in their element. So a big mahalo to the AIGA team for inviting us to be a part of this awesome event--we had a blast!
