Naughty But Nice
As 2015 and the holidays come to a close, we wanted to share a behind-the-scenes-look at our holiday installations for The Modern Honolulu Hotel. We're absolute fans of their brand and we were honored to once again design their spaces for guests and visitors to experience the holiday spirit in a not-so-traditional fashion.
This year, we were inspired by the classic holiday ornament and designed several installations throughout the hotel using this as our muse. Simple and timeless, the spherical ornament was the perfect piece to decorate their property in unique and unexpected ways.
As a nod to their brand, we also infused our own twist and recoined the theme of "naughty BUT nice" to incorporate the modern brand and bring the ornaments to life.
A sleek color palette included metallic silver, white, and black, with accents of magenta to incorporate one of their brand colors.
To greet guests to this year's holiday concept, we designed a vinyl window treatment in the shape of ornaments mounted on their reception windows. The silhouette of the vinyl ornaments provided a simple yet playful welcome for guests and visitors as they entered the property.
Within the lobby, we then placed a 7' high tree covered in over 1700 black and magenta ornaments in a striped pattern. As an additional accent, several words that reflected the "naughty but nice" theme and the hotel's brand were turned into dimensional ornaments. Each word was laser cut and finished in a glossy white hue.
THE ELEVATOR LANDING
On the 2nd floor landing, we designed and mounted oversized vinyl ornaments to spell "naughty." In the spirit of the holidays, we curated four pedestals with various products that guests could purchase and experience, including items from Morimoto, Addiction Nightclub, their spa, and their gift shop.
For the main installation, we designed a striking focal wall adorned with (of course) more ornaments. Spanning 21.5 feet, hooks were individually mounted in a grid pattern as the foundation of the installation. 1600 ornaments were then hand-placed and metallic silver ornaments were strategically positioned to spell out the word "nice."
In front of the "nice" wall, we placed an 8' high tree constructed of over 1900 magenta ornaments. Laser cut letters also adorned the tree. Oversized gift boxes accented the main area and served as a popular spot for group photos and selfies.
Check out the video below to see how this all came to life over the span of three days (er, overnighters).
